Momentum Releases Heavy-Duty Vertical Turning Lathe | Modern Machine Shop

Momentum’s MVL-10HD is engineered for heavy metal removal rates and includes Momentum’s full-wrap, arc-shaped column, full-length cross rail and single piece saddle.

Momentum Machine Tool Company has released its new MVL-10HD, a heavy-duty, ram-type vertical turning lathe (VTL), featuring 49" in swing and a 1005 mm (39") diameter table. The MVL-10HD is engineered for heavy metal removal rates and includes Momentum’s full-wrap, arc-shaped column, full-length cross rail and single piece saddle. The MVL can be configured so that the ram and tool changer natively accept Capto, KM, CAT or other standards, in capacities of up to 60 tools. These designs may also replace the horizontal-umbrella rotation style automatic tool changer (ATC) with a vertical chain ATC and a side-arm tool-changer instead, reducing floor space and tool change time. The MVL’s cross rail extends fully to both sides of the spindle, 645 mm of travel in the negative x direction and 900 mm of z-axis travel. Memntum says this enables easy access to probing part diameters as well as using left and right inserts on each turning tool holder, which effectively doubles tooling capacity.

The standard table on the MVL-10HD is 1,005 mm  in diameter and will both swing and turn up to 1,250 mm.  Maximum turning height is 900 mm and capacity on the table is 4,000 kg (8,815.5 lbs).

All structural components on the MVL-10HD, including its base, column and cross rail, are made from cast iron that is stress-relieved for deformation-free performance. All axis ways are of box-type construction, high frequency induction-hardened and Turcite-B coated for wear resistance.

The MVL features a full-wrap, arc-shaped column which fully curves around the table to maximize mass, rigidity and dampening. The full-wrap column also minimizes the distance between the column's box ways and the cutting insert suspended from them. A single piece, extra-long cast iron saddle supports the ram during cutting, providing additional rigidity.

A 55/45 kW spindle motor is standard on the MVL-10HD, with an optional, less powerful 45/38 kW available as well. The axes are driven by 7 kW servo motors providing 393.7 inches/minute rapids.

By employing advanced high efficiency milling techniques for the entire machining routine, SolidCAM’s iMachining technology can drastically reduce cycle times while vastly improving tool life compared to traditional milling.

Lathes represent some of the oldest machining technology, but it’s still helpful to remember the basics when considering the purchase of a new turning machine.
